Purdue College of Engineering Creates MRI Device


An engineer with more than two decades of experience, Ajoy Kapila serves as Senior Corporate Optimization Engineer for MillerCoors, LLC, in Milwaukee. Ajoy Kapila holds a Master of Science in IT Management from Colorado Technical University and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, where graduate students recently developed groundbreaking new MRI technology .

Purdue’s College of Engineering has developed technology that works alongside existing MRI machines to conduct simultaneous medical imaging and recording. The technology records electro-physiological signals during scanning and allows medical personnel to monitor patients more effectively. The device was created with the goal of learning when to start and stop recording in order to obtain meaningful signals during MRI scans. 

The technology was developed by two graduate research assistants, Ranajay Mandal and Nishant Babaria, under the direction of Zhongming Liu, an assistant professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Researchers from Purdue shared their findings on the technology at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.
